In order to install your 3-function lights on your 1997 Dodge Ram 3500 that has combined stop/turn wiring you will need a vehicle-to-vehicle taillight converter, part # 118158 from Tow Ready. This converter separates the combined stop/turn functions into separate signals that run on separate wires. This converter will work only on incandescent lights, but not with LEDs.

We have the Heavy Duty Magnetic Tow Lights # TL21RK from Optronics that already uses a 4-Way wiring harness. All you have to do is string the excess wiring over the vehicle that you are pulling and plug the 4-Way from the Magnetic Tow Lights it into the 4-Way at the rear of your tow vehicle.

If your tow vehicle has a 7-Way then I recommend installing the Flexo-Coil Wiring Kit # RM-15267. If you have a 4-Way on your tow vehicle then I recommend using the Tow Ready Tail Light Isolating Diode System # TR118821 instead. Both wiring systems tie into the lighting on your Sportage and protect the wiring on your tow vehicle via diodes.

On trailers, the turn signals and brake lights are combined. You could install the Vehicle to Vehicle Taillight Converter, # 118158, but your side marker lights must be dual function lights, like our Optronics Oval LED Turn Signal and Parking Light, # STL78AB. If your current running lights have only one wire, not including a ground wire, to power the light, it is not a dual function light. Since you already have the tow bar the other items you will need are the base plates, safety cables, and light kit to tow your vehicle behind a RV.
